Article: http://www.pcworld.com/article/170152/realdvd_ruling_should_you_care.html
I chose the above article for the sake of commenting on it. I’ll being doing an actual post later this week or over the weekend. But frankly, there is another argument to this whole DVD ripping deal and that is; Why punish the people who are being honest?
What do I mean by that? All this whole situation did was throw a spotlight onto the very issue the MPAA (and others) is trying to keep hidden. Do these people really think those that are willing to pay $30 to “copy their DVDs” to their harddrives are going to be using the tool to then share the contents? The people that are really the issue are not going to be paying $30 for a restricted rip of the DVDs. Not when so many other tools exist. It isn’t like torrents suddenly started appearing simply because RealDVD was released.
By putting so much emphasis on this issue now people are going to be curious, mad and annoyed. Why? Because now they know there is something cool they want to learn about (curious) and will be annoyed that a tool they could get has been removed and mad that they can’t do what they want with their DVDs. Those that would have just stopped at feeling better about having a digital back up of their DVDs will now find the urge and interest to research the issue thoroughly and will probably add to the headache that MPAA (and others) have created for themselves.

Article: Apple changes mind on rejected e-book reader app
I’m actually commenting more on the discussion that took place between the readers of the above article than the article itself. It’s interesting to me to see the different views from the various posters. “It is Apple’s store, they can do with it as they please.” Then there is the “censorship and double standard is wrong.” There is of course the whole “Apple vs Microsoft and who would do what” argument.
Frankly, no one, regardless of whether or not they own the software/hardware/people that make the damn things, should play parent. The people that have the phones are adults and if they are minors then their parent(s) or guardian(s) purchased the phone for them. If they managed to get the phone and sign a legal contract and are under 18 then go after the person who sold them the phone. Either way, I think Apple would be hard pressed to validate their intentions to be a parental layer in the lives of minors and even adults. Yes they own it and no people won’t stop buyng their things because of how they handle their stuff, but that doesn’t make it any less infuriating and certainly my purchasing their equipment does not give them a license to silence me and force me to deal with their “standards.” I’m the customer, not the other way around.
In addition to the apps mentioned in the above article, I also wanted to point out that the fmylife app for the IPhone (the app not the site) excludes the “adult” content from its categories and general postings. I can only imagine it was objectionable and so Apple forced them to censor it. Which leads me to the other comments: if the music, videos and Internet browser “subject” us to the same things why limit the App store? I have a theory…. perhaps after being beaten into submission by the music and movie industries they are trying lashing out and flex their hollowed muscles by controlling the only thing in their company they can (save for of course whether or not someone can take out the battery from their laptop or cell phone).

To be perfectly honest, I’m tired of signing up for sites to leave comments on their articles. So, I’m going to leave a comment here and post a link to the article in question. And I’m actually going to make a new category for this too. I’m so smart, in the word’s of Mr. John, that is why my mom called me “son.”
Article: Apple: World’s First Victorian Tech Company
In response to the above article, perhaps we need to look outside the box. We already know Apple’s review process is twisted at best, I wonder if there is any merit to the concept that Apple is dabbling not so much in censorship but anti-competitive tendencies. Amazon would certainly have the financial backing to offer Apple incentive to limiting the amount of e-reader applications, especially those that provide free content.

Just a quick note before a more detailed post later: is Apple insulting it’s customers with the new shuffle?
Sure it is amazing (sort of…. It is basically a shiny USB stick with a head phones jack and a switch), small, desirable and will give many wet dreams… But is it worth it?
It is if you don’t mind Apple’s default headphones and a lack of ability to use the Shuffle in your car via an input jack. If you want more comfortable headphones you have to fork put another $80. Sure after market items may and most likely will pop up in time but the fact we have wait for such to happen to not have to pay an arm and leg is insulting.
Yes Apple is a company and they are going to try and make money… But that doesn’t mean I can’t be insulted by such tactics. And in case you aren’t following what I mean: the controls are on the headphones. No Apple headphones no way to control the Shuffle.
